Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, the wife of the Ekiti State Governor,
has emphasized the importance of including grassroots women in various
initiatives and programs aimed at supporting vulnerable groups in society. This
call was made during a meeting in Ado-Ekiti with the wives of Local Government
and Council Development Areas Chairmen, as reported by the News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN).
Dr. Oyebanji highlighted the need to address the specific needs of vulnerable groups such as widows, orphans, the underprivileged, and the indigent. She mentioned that initiatives like the Widows and Orphans Hope (WAOH) project from her office and the Renewed Hope Initiative from Senator Remi Tinubu, the President's wife, have been established to enhance the welfare of these groups.
She urged the council chairmen's wives to replicate these projects in their respective areas, focusing on economic empowerment, agricultural development, healthcare, education, and social investment. Dr. Oyebanji stressed the importance of using their positions to combat poverty and requested feedback, particularly on gender-related issues. "The local governments are too quiet. There is a need for impactful actions. Ensure that all pet projects are operational in your localities. I want you to be proactive," she added.
Additionally, Mrs. Kemi Dairo, the WAOH Project Coordinator in the state, called for the support of council areas to effectively identify and assist vulnerable individuals. Mrs. Shelly Attaniel, the Gender Officer from the Governor’s wife’s office, recommended that the council chairmen's wives conduct surveillance in rural areas to prevent violence against women and ensure justice for the vulnerable.
Earlier in the meeting, Mrs. Ebunlomo Adetunji, the Coordinator of Ekiti Council Chairmen's Wives, praised the proactive measures aimed at supporting orphans and widows. She promised that these efforts would be extended to the grassroots level.
